Editorial Policies
Editorial statement
Psymposia is a research and media 501(c)(3) nonprofit that offers critical perspectives on drugs, politics, and culture.
Our perspectives are informed by critical analysis of the systemic crises we currently face: the socioeconomic inequalities of capitalism, the community-shattering effects of racist policing, the violence caused by drug prohibition, the erosion of civil liberties though mass surveillance, the continuation of slavery through mass incarceration, white supremacism and the rise of fascism, and global climate catastrophe.
As a nonprofit, we believe solutions start by ensuring that communities have access to factual information in order to make well-informed decisions. We’re committed to challenging power through independent reporting and critical analysis.
Psymposia publish reports, podcasts, and investigative journalism. We are committed to rigorous fact-checking and careful sourcing in everything we publish.
Editorial independence
Psymposia maintains full editorial independence from all funding sources. Donors and funders play no role in determining our editorial priorities or influencing our conclusions.
Attribution and anonymous sources
We strive to obtain on-the-record information and directly attributable quotations whenever possible. In circumstances that warrant it, we may grant anonymity to a source who is a whistleblower or sources who could reasonably face harm, retaliation, or imprisonment if identified. When anonymity is granted, we will explain the basis for that decision.
Tips, leaks, and whistleblowers
We welcome tips and leaked information of all kinds. Your identity and information will be kept confidential. To contact us and learn more about our tips and whistleblower process, click here.
Corrections requests
If you believe we have made a factual error and would like to request a correction, please email us with “Corrections” in the subject line and include a link to the story. We review all correction requests. If we determine that a minor error was made, we will correct it and add an updated correction note at the bottom of the story. If a more substantial error was made, we will add an editor’s note to the top of the story and explain the reason for the change.
Submissions and guidelines
While most of our stories are reported internally by our team, we occasionally accept essay pitches. Before submitting a pitch, please familiarize yourself with our areas of interest and our approach to previous stories.
